Deceptively Energetic Chia Seed Energy Drink

This is a nice little recipe that we found in “Born to Run: The hidden tribe, the ultra-runners, and the greatest race the world has never seen” by Christopher McDougall. It is a wonderful little pick up drink after a longer run. It is a surprisingly magical drink. If we are going out for a longer run we will mix a couple of cups of this up before we head out so it is waiting for us on our return. The texture is a little odd but something that we have grown to enjoy.

Ingredients

This is a very simple drink that you can customise to your own tastes.

Core ingredients

This recipe is for one cup.

1 x teaspoon of Chia seeds.

1 x cup of water

A pinch of salt

1 x tablespoon of a source of sugar and flavour

Optional Ingredients

The source of sugar is where you can start experimenting. Some options we have found that work well:

Agave nectar

Agave nectar and mango squash

Apple and raspberry juice with a splash of honey

Cyder vinegar, honey, and a sprig of rosemary

Cooking equipment

There are only two pieces of equipment at a push (as most recipes wouldn't even state these!)

Cup - A cup we tend to only use small tumblers.

Teaspoon - Depending on your cup, you may want to use a sundae spoon so you can reach the bottom.

Method

This has to be the simplest method for a recipe we've ever written down. The only key bit here is to make it enough in advance to rehydrate the chia seeds.

Place one teaspoon of chia seeds into a cup.

Add pinch of salt.

Add source of sugar and any other flavours you may choose.

Top up cup with water.

Stir up mixture and leave, as the chia seeds will hydrate and turn into a tapioca type consistency.

Prior to serving it is worth giving another quick mix. Enjoy!

Trail tips

Make up a batch before heading out so you have a sweet treat on your return. This also helps with the post run slump when you are stinking and really need a shower but don't want to move.
