Canoeing Wild Rivers

Canoeing Wild Rivers; Cliff Jacobson; Fifth Edition; 2015; ISBN 978-1-4930-0825-4

When preparing for the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) we were recommended this book and it was well worth it! This book is an encyclopaedia of knowledge relating to all forms of canoeing, as the title says, wild rivers. If you are going into the backcountry in a canoe we would highly recommend this book as well.

It is not just about canoeing techniques, but also about expeditioning in a canoe too. One of the most useful pieces of expedition information we found was how to make your own ‘Susie Bag’, which is a bug net big enough to cover you whilst you’re sitting and eating. These were really useful for our thru-paddle, and we’ll likely throw them in for any camp where there might be lots of small bugs from now on.

Reasons to read:

  • The principles and critically the way of thinking are spot on.

  • Helpful suggestions and practical guidance.

  • Considerations for preparations before the expedition.

Things to watch out for:

  • Some of the sections relating to equipment are a little out of date given there are new items on the market, but this would likely be the case with many books.

  • Focused mainly on canoeing in North America.

Would we recommend this book?

If you are going to canoe wild rivers or even if you are going on a canoe expedition of any sort, then YES! This book is jam packed with useful information.
